The history of philological research on the Bible is connected to the names of the founders of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.  After its founding, this research was impeded by various kinds of obstacles (ideological, material).  These are the reasons as to why such an important book of Georgian culture has still not been published or studied to this day.

The goal of the groups, which researches Georgian translations of the Bible at TSU, first of all is an actualization of problems relating to the Georgian Bible:  its background, language, the character of its translation, text history, its manuscripts in the context of namely Georgian philology and in general, biblical studies and Medieval philology. This is impossible without scholarly publications of Georgian texts, as well as detailed and intensive studies of texts that have been carried out with different approaches.

At TSU, the research of Georgian translations of books of the Bible is implemented by two groups:

Philology of the Old Testament

Philology of the New Testament
